... first using it, but I used to use Dreamweaver 4, back in the days before I could code my own markup, and when I was still using layout tables for graphical borders etc. I'm a fully converted structural XHTML/CSS dreamer now.
WYSIWYG HTML authoring tools I no longer use, for the reasons you say above. I always imagine them as being more applicable for 'end-users' than designers/developers. That sounds snobbish and derisory, but I don't mean to be. I just mean that personally I am far happier doing my markup by hand, in Windows Notepad or in Domino Designer. I'm not even that keep on a text-style HTML authoring tool that indents my tagging for me. That's just my personal preference.
The real point I intended to make was of application-level markup muddying, not author-level. Like Domino deciding to give my <head> elements NOINDEX meta tags if I embed a view, etc. It's all the little things that Domino does to the markup that prevent it validating as XHTML or whatever I am coding.
FrontPage is used at this company by departmental Intranet page authors. It is a bit of a nightmare, as what they inevitably produce isn't what the I.S. Web Designers always want, for the markup muddying reasons you mention.
Apparantley the NEW Dreamweaver can produce proper XHTML which I guess is an improvement, but I'll still rather do my markup by hand!
