Notes/Domino 4 and 5 Forum

I've been asked to look at a Notes system that has been rather neglected. The Lotus Domino Server service gets itself into a permenant 'starting' status. Rebooting seems to be the only way out. Is there something I can try to resolve this without having to reboot. Start/Stop options are greyed out. Should I try killing 'nservice.exe' ? Grateful for any help.
