Lotus have made it so unbelievably difficult to counter spam mail when running pop3 on a live domino box. Of course there are no documents available and like other users who post on notes.net the only option is to test, test and test again. Nice one lotus !
Anyway we had a situation where we thought we had our pop server locked down against spamming. We even got the all clear from orbz and a few other sites that help counter spam.
Then all of a sudden bang! the box is getting hit at an unbelievable rate. It was stopping 90 - 95 % of stuff but some was getting through and our ISP wasnt a happy camper. Anyway after lots of testing we got it right. Because of the nature of POP3 people have to be able to relay off it for mail to work. So the tricky part is specifying exactly who can and can't. Forget about using names, addresses or hostnames. The only way to do it is to specify the IP range in the config document of the server under SMTP inbound controls "Allow messages only from the following external hosts to be sent to external domains" Here put in your IP range in brackets e.g [192.168.1.*]
There are one or two other small settings too but that is the important one. the rest are easy enough to figure it out
i hope this helps all the admins and f***S up the spammers! roryhiggins@hotmail.com
