You hit the nail on the head when you said "i cant get my head round how values are inherited when you change a value on an existing document..does inheritance work only in the direction of parent to response or can it work the other way"
There are only two rules to inheritance:
1) It only works at the moment that a new document is created, and will NOT propagate edits made in an existing document to another existing document.
2) Data flows from the currently selected document to the one being created at that moment.
