Overview
Prior to activating your BlackBerry® smartphone for the IBM SmartCloud Notes service, you must meet the following conditions.
Conditions:
- Your BlackBerry® smartphone's wireless carrier plan must be an Enterprise plan. A smartphone cannot be activated for the service when a Personal plan is used.
- You cannot activate your BlackBerry® smartphone for SmartCloud Notes until your company administrator adds the BlackBerry® smartphone subscription to your account.
- If you are currently using your BlackBerry® smartphone, it has data on it that must be backed up and then wiped. The phone must be wiped or the activation will not be successful.
- To back up your BlackBerry® smartphone, you must have access to a computer where:
- A version of BlackBerry® Desktop Software compatible that is with your BlackBerry® smartphone is installed, and
- You can access your user account and SmartCloud Notes mail file using the SmartCloud Notes web interface.
Activation guidelines:
- You activate your BlackBerry® smartphone for SmartCloud Notes using an Enterprise Activation password you should have received from your administrator. An alternative is for you to create the Enterprise Activation password using the steps in this document.
- When you activate your BlackBerry® smartphone you must enter your SmartCloud Notes Internet email address and password on the smartphone. If you do not know this information, consult with your administrator.
- After creation of the activation password and the backup and wipe processes are complete, your smartphone is ready to be activated. You have 48 hours from the time the activation password is created to do the activation. After 48 hours the password expires and another one must be created.
This exercise is divided into the following procedures:
- Procedure A: Back up data on the BlackBerry® smartphone
- Procedure B: Wipe the BlackBerry® smartphone
- Procedure C: Activate BlackBerry® smartphone
Note: If you have any issues or questions while attempting to activate your BlackBerry smartphone for IBM SmartCloud Notes, check End user: FAQs and troubleshooting tips for activating BlackBerry® smartphone for IBM SmartCloud Notes for a possible solution.

Procedure A: Back up data on the BlackBerry® smartphone
If you currently use your BlackBerry® smartphone, or if it has been used in the past, back up the data on it prior to wiping and activating it for SmartCloud Notes. In order to do so, your BlackBerry® smartphone should be connected to a computer using a USB cable.
Note: The steps below are based on the BlackBerry® Desktop Software version 6.1.x for Windows™ as available from the Research In Motion® web site with a BlackBerry® Bold™ 9700 smartphone using OS v6.0.0.344 The user interface for other versions of the BlackBerry® Desktop Software as well as various BlackBerry® smartphone models and operating systems, may differ from the steps below.
Refer to BlackBerry® smartphone resources such as your manual or the BlackBerry® Knowledge Base for information on your specific smartphone. The BlackBerry® Knowledge Base article, How to back up the data on a BlackBerry smartphone , may be of assistance.
- Using a USB cable, connect your BlackBerry® smartphone to the computer that has the BlackBerry® Desktop Software installed.
Note: When you connect the BlackBerry® smartphone to the computer, it may prompt for a device password that you normally enter when you use your BlackBerry® smartphone. Type the password you use to access your smartphone.
- If the BlackBerry® Desktop Software does not automatically launch on the computer when you connect the smartphone, start it now.
- Click the Back up now button in the BlackBerry® Desktop Software application. Or from the menu, select Device -> Back up .
- In the Back Up Options window select Full (all device data and settings) for Backup type. In the File Options section, make note of your settings, especially where your backup .ipd file will be saved, then click Back Up.

- Make sure that other files you wish to retain, such as pictures and videos, are stored on the device media card, if applicable, or have been downloaded onto another device.

The BlackBerry® smartphone must be wiped so that Activation can succeed.
Note: These steps will differ depending on the operating system version on the BlackBerry® smartphone. The steps below were performed on a BlackBerry® smartphone using OS v5.0.0.321.
