You must designate at least one
Domino® directory and
Domino server in your environment for directory synchronization. A synchronized directory is replicated to the service. Any
Domino directory with users to be provisioned for the service must be synchronized. You can also synchronize directories in which only on-premises users are registered. Then, users in the service can use the directory to look up the names and addresses of the on-premises users.
About this task
When you provide Account Settings to prepare to run the Domain Configuration tool, you specify the directory synchronization server to use, and optionally a secondary server. You also specify each
Domino directory to synchronize. The Domain Configuration tool creates partial replicas of each directory on servers in the service. The servers in the service use the directory replicas for various purposes. For example, the servers find user information in a Person document, or settings in a custom Policy document.
For high availability, you can use two directory synchronization servers. You can use the same servers for directory synchronization and mail routing. Which server configuration is best for you depends on factors such as the extent of directory changes and the volume of mail traffic. Keep in mind that you can always add a server, if needed, at any point.

Lotus®
Domino servers."
