Use a Global Domain document to define a foreign mail server domain owned by your company. The Global Domain document is used only to define the domain in the service and to allow you to verify ownership of the domain.
About this task
When a service user addresses mail to a user with a foreign mail server, the service routes the mail to an on-premises primary mail hub server. If the hub server has a Foreign SMTP Domain document for the domain, it routes it to the foreign domain. Otherwise, it routes it to another server.
Keep in mind the following requirements for the Global Domain document:
- To ensure that it is not used for on-premises mail routing, create the Global Domain document in a Domino® directory that is not a primary directory on your mail hub server. The directory in which you create the document must be synchronized with the service.
- When creating the document, select Global Domain in the Domain type field.
- If you own more than one foreign server domain, you can create a separate Global Domain document for each or you can define all in one Global Domain document. To define domains in one document, list one domain in the Local primary Internet domain field and others in the Alternate Internet domain aliases field.
- Make sure the Domino directory profile of the directory in which you put the Global Domain document has a unique name specified in the Domain defined by this Domino Directory field.
It is important that you do not put the Global Domain document for a foreign server domain in the primary Domino Directory of a mail hub server. If you do, the hub server treats the domain as a local domain and does not honor the Foreign SMTP Domain document for mail routing in your on-premises environment.
Users from the foreign mail server domain can have Person documents in a
Domino directory that is synchronized with the service. Person documents help service users address mail to these users, but the Person documents are not required for mail routing. If you create Person documents for foreign mail server users, select
Other Internet Mail in the
Mail system field. This field value is required for the service to route messages addressed to these users to the on-premises mail hub servers.
