Building a great application requires the right tools. You can think of IBM® Lotus® Domino® Designer 8.5 as your workshop -- it contains all the tools you need to build a powerful application.

IBM Lotus Domino Designer 8.5 has taken on a new look! You still have the same tools you’ve always had in Domino Designer, but now it’s built on Eclipse which provides enhanced navigation and search capabilities, increased customization, Web, JavaScript, and style sheet editing resources right from within Designer, and an extensible application development environment. Let’s take a look at the new Domino Designer 8.5 interface.

The Applications Navigator displays the design elements and resource types that an application can contain. The design elements are grouped logically with the most frequently used elements at the top of the navigator.

If you click an element, such as XPages for example, a list of the pages stored in the current database displays in a Design list on the Work pane.

If you right-click the Navigator, you can open and create applications and refresh views and elements you are working on.

Design action buttons trigger common tasks, such as creating new design elements. These appear when you double-click a design element in the Applications Navigator.

When a design element or resource type is selected in the Applications Navigator, the work pane or canvas displays the Design list. When an element or resource is selected from the Design list, the work pane or canvas displays two sections: the upper section contains the Work area for the element or resource and the lower section contains the Programmer's pane and Properties view.

The Properties view lets you set properties for design elements. These properties displayed in infoboxes in previous releases of Domino Designer. The Properties view interacts with the editor that is currently open. For example, if you are designing an XPage, and you move focus to a specific control in the page, the properties for that control become available in the Properties view.

An XPage is a new design element fully integrated within an NSF database. An XPage defines a page that can be rendered in a browser, and is served up by the Domino Web server along with other design elements in your application.

The Controls palette contains the UI controls, custom controls, and user added controls used for designing the layout of XPages and determining how data will be entered and stored in the database. You can drag and drop controls from the Controls palette onto XPages.

Drag and drop the Check Box control onto Site Finder XPage.

The Outline view provides a hierarchical representation of the XML source code in XPages. You can click on the individual nodes in the Outline view to navigate through the page and update properties in the Properties view.

Click Table row in the Outline view, then click All Properties in the Properties view.
|
|
|
The Events view is where you create events for components, pages, and controls. You can use the Events view to attach simple actions or scripts to events. Events are organized into categories for easy access.

- Click Add Action.
- Select Basic for the Category.
- Select Open page for the Action.
- Select Launch Page in the Name of page to open field.
- Select New document in the Target document field.

|
The Data Palette lets you view data sources associated with the selected page or panel in the editor, and create controls by dragging elements into the page.

- Click Define Data Source.
- Select Domino View for the Data source.
- Select SiteList in the View field.
- Drag all data source elements onto the Site Finder XPage.
