After setting up your BlackBerry device and the account. Your next step is to determine which protocol is to be used to pull messages down to your device.
To help determine which protocol to use contact your cell service provider. You can also review the technote 'IMAP VS. POP3' to get an understanding on the advantages and disadvantages of each protocol.

POP3:
1 Change the User's person document Mail System to POP or IMAP.
2. Make sure the user has an internet password setup in their person document.
3. Make sure the user has an internet address listed in the internet address field of the person document.
4. Change the field 'format preferences for incoming mail' to 'Prefers MIME' in the person document.
5. Check the server document and make sure POP3 is enabled and listening on port 110
6. Load the pop3 task on the server by using the console command 'load task pop3'.
IMAP
1 Change the User's person document Mail System to POP or IMAP.
2. Make sure the user has a internet password setup in their person document.
3. Make sure the user has an internet address listed in the internet address field of the person document.
4. Change the field 'format preferences for incoming mail' to 'Prefers MIME' in the person document.
5. Check the server document and make sure IMAP is enabled and listening on port 143
6. Load the IMAP task on the server by using the console command 'load task IMAP'.
6. Enable the mail file for IMAP Support.
1. At the server console of the Domino server on which you want to enable mail files, shut down the Router by entering:
tell router quit
This prevents Domino from routing mail to the mail files while they are being converted. Mail is stored in MAIL.BOX while you upgrade the mail files. After you have converted the mail files and loaded the Router task again, the Router processes and delivers the mail in MAIL.BOX.
2. Load the mail conversion utility by entering the following command:
load convert -e maildirectory\mailfilename
where maildirectory names the path to the mail subdirectory that contains the user's mail file and mailfilename is the filename of the user's mail file. The maildirectory path describes the path relative to the server's Domino data directory. For example, to convert the mail database USER.NSF in the \MAIL subdirectory of the Domino data directory enter:
load convert -e mail\user.nsf
Note On UNIX® systems, use a forward slash (/) as the hierarchy separator, rather than a backslash (\). For example, enter:
load convert -e mail/user.nsf
To specify all files in a directory, make sure the directory contains only mail files and that they are the mail files you want to convert. For example, to enable IMAP for all mail files in the \MAIL subdirectory, enter:
load convert -e mail\*.nsf
3. After you finish enabling mail files for IMAP on this server, load the Router by entering:
load router
The credentials to use to authenticate can vary. Most often its the same Name and Password used to authenticate via HTTP.
Account/Login name - The name by which the user authenticates with the Domino server. Valid user name values depend on the setting in the Internet authentication field of the Server document:
- If the server is set to use "More name variations with lower security," users can enter a login name that matches any entry in the First name, Last name, User name or Short name/UserID field of the Person document, as long as it is unique within the Domino Directory, for example, JCorrer.
- If the server uses "Fewer name variations with higher security," a user's login name must match an entry in the User name field of the Person document, for example, Jada Correr/ACME
Password The Internet password from the user's Person document.
