This article discusses Traveler support for multiple users sharing a single Android device.
|
Android 4.2 now supports multiple users (on some devices.) Additional users are created from the Android Settings->Users screen. Each user has their own login password, home screens, and installed applications. You can switch which user is active from the lock screen.
Traveler may be installed by each Android user on the same device and will function correctly with the following notations:
-
IBM recommends that each user register to the same Traveler server or High-Availability pool. While it is possible to register to different servers providing different client version levels, all device users will only be able to use the latest client version. This is a result of the Android multi-user design which actually installs only one copy of a given application on the device. If any user upgrades, then all users are immediately upgraded to the same level. If users are not registered to the same server, then they may see Traveler “version mismatch” prompts. These can be ignored, as Android will not permit the installation of a older client.
-
The device ID returned to the server is the same for each user. However, the Traveler server pre-pends the user ID to the device ID, so that each user has a unique ID. This allows the server to direct management operations to the correct user on the device.
-
Each user may have independent passwords and server defined password requirements.
- Server wipe of the device storage card. For pre 9.0.1.3 clients, there are several storage card directories that can not be deleted and will result in an error. Therefore, storage card wipe will not complete. Later client versions do not attempt to delete these directories, so storage card wipe should complete successfully.
-
Server wipe of Traveler application data stops Traveler and removes data for that user. Other users are not affected.
-
Server wipe of the device wipes entire device, no matter which user receives this command.
-
Note: It has come to our attention that Samsung has removed multi-user capability for some of their devices running Android 5.x. Any questions regarding this should be directed to Samsung.
