Find out what's new and changed in each version of Notes. Read the highlights, or get the complete list!

This table will be particularly helpful if you're upgrading by several versions (for example, from Notes 8.0.2 to Notes 8.5.3).

VersionHighlightsAll new features & how to enable/use them
Notes 8.5.3
  • Choose a different signature more easily, with a new Signature button in the action bar on emails.
  • Pick any color or boldness to distinguish between read and unread emails in your inbox and other mail folders.
  • If you want, when new mail arrives, a small window can slide into the bottom right corner of your screen with a preview of the new email or emails, including the subject, and sender.
  • Set a new preference to keep a placeholder on your calendar for countered meetings, until the new time has been accepted by the meeting owner.
  • If you add or remove invitees from a meeting, set a preference to always update that information for all meeting participants.
  • Hide recent contacts instead of deleting them, to prevent them from being added back into recent contacts later.
What's New in Lotus Notes 8.5.3?
Notes 8.5.2
  • You can set a default font for emails you write.
  • When setting your signature, choose between rich text, plain text, or and html or image file.
  • If you have Connections, you can open Connections applications from the Open list.
  • If the server fails while you're working, it'll automatically switch to a new one without interrupting you.
  • Set a new preference to automatically close an email after replying to or forwarding it.
  • You can add rooms & resources to your calendar to view room availability and reserve rooms and resources, if your organization uses a rooms and resources application.
  • A new calendar view lets you see calendar entries organized by category.
  • You can mark a contact or group private, so if you have given someone access to your mail, calendar, and contacts, they cannot see that contact or group.
What's New in Notes 8.5, 8.5.1, and 8.5.2
Notes 8.5.1
  • Use new toolbar icons to add a link, change text color, highlight text, or make text underlined.
  • Perform meeting actions, such as Accept and Decline, from the preview pane in Mail, Calendar, and To Do.
  • Do things faster with drag & drop:
    • Drag email to the main or sidebar calendar to create a calendar entry
    • Drag calendar entries to a new date in the main or sidebar calendar to reschedule or counter
    • Drag documents or shortcuts from your operating system Desktop or file folder to the Open list or a Bookmark folder. For example, drag a Symphony™ document to a Bookmark folder, or drag a Notepad shortcut to the Open list.
  • You can save your web meeting information, to use in meeting invitations.
What's New in Notes 8.5, 8.5.1, and 8.5.2
Notes 8.5
  • Search Notes from a convenient new search bar in the Notes toolbar.
  • Right-click an email or document to mark it read or unread.
  • Import contacts from another source into Notes, or export your Notes contacts
  • Typeahead includes all contacts in your Notes Contacts.
  • See and use other calendars on your Notes calendar. You can add other Notes users' calendars, activities, private or public Google calendars, iCalendar feeds, or Notes applications' calendar (such as a Notes TeamRoom's calendar)
  • Forward your contacts to others, using the Forward as vCard button in Contacts.
  • In Contacts, add tabs for Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese, or Cyrillic characters.
  • Personal Journal is renamed to "Notebook" and has a new look.
What's New in Notes 8.5, 8.5.1, and 8.5.2
Notes 8.0.2
  • Starting in Notes 8.0, you select documents in Notes the same way you select things in your operating system (usually clicking, shift+click, etc). In Notes 8.0.2, there's a new preference that lets you choose between that method or the classic Notes selection method (checkmarks in the margins)
  • The rest of the updates in 8.0.2 were performance improvements, rather than new features.
What's new in Notes and Domino 8.0.2
Notes 8.0.1
  • If you have a mail quota, a new status icon in your Mail tells you how close full your quota is.
  • Save your conference call information, so you can more easily include it in meeting invitations.
  • You can delete an address from Recent Contacts and move someone from Recent Contacts to My Contacts, to permanently keep that person's information.
  • A new Widgets and Live Text feature, enabling you to create and share your own widgets, use widgets that were created and installed for you, and see and act on Live Text in any Notes® document.
What's new in Lotus Notes 8 and 8.0.1
Notes 8
  • Databases are now called "applications."
  • All applications can be opened from a new Open button in the top left of the screen.
  • Choose the location of the preview pane: below message list or next to it.
  • New web browser embedded in Notes, and the choice to use it or the default web browser for your system.
  • New sidebar provides easy access to Sametime, Day-at-a-Glance calendar, Feeds, and Activities.
  • Help pane can stay open as you work.
  • Add a photo for contacts
  • New Recent Contacts view that shows users with whom you have recently interacted, such as email correspondence or chats.
  • Calendar entries you haven't responded to yet appear on your calendar as "ghosted" (grey/pale) entries, if you set a preference.
  • Mail has easier-to-access menu bar choices, requiring fewer "clicks" to perform desired actions.
  • You can create your own personal Web logs (blogs) from within Notes, using the Blog (dominoblog.ntf) template. You add content to the blog using either Notes or a Web browser.
