The default SMTP connection time out is 3 minutes. The default value for
SMTPTimeoutMultiplier is 1. Increasing SMTPTimeoutMultiplier to 3 will
cause connections to remain open for 9 minutes instead of 3 minutes. Setting
SMTPTimeoutMultiplier to 100 would keep the connections open for 5 hours!
When SMTPTimeoutMultiplier is absent, or set to 0 or 1, the multiplier
is 'off' and the SMTP time out is 3 minutes.
A long, long time ago when developing R5, networks were sometime slow.
Increasing the time out would sometimes be helpful. However, keeping bogus
connections open for an extended period of time is going to take a toll
on server performance. Be very careful when increasing this value. The
default time out is most likely already too high. Increasing this time
out is probably ill advised. If you do increase this value, only increase
it as much as necessary and no more. Do not pick some arbitrarily high
