Lotus Notes/Domino Full-text Indexing Basics

History
Lotus Domino® full-text indexing has used the Global Text Retrieval (GTR) engine since Domino 5.0.3 and has been the default full-text index (FTI) engine for individual database full-text indexing and domain indexing since Domino 5.0.5.  The GTR was developed at IBM and utilizes n-gram language processing concepts to provide efficient approximate matching.

Creating the Full-text Index

There are only two means of creating an FTI for an individual database, from the Full Text tab of the database properties dialogue or from the Server Administration panel available under the Files tab of the Domino Administrator client.  Using either of these means sets a bit property within the database to indicate the creation of an index.

The indexing rate for text is approximately 300-450 MB per hour, and is highly dependent on the host operating system environment, memory, and processing speed.  With this rate of indexing, creating an index of a database in the 600MB to 1.2GB range will take an estimated hour of time to complete.

Further information regarding the creation of Full-text indexes is available on the Information Center.
