Welcome to IBM Notes 9.0 Social Edition! This edition of Notes looks fresh, modern, and streamlined. It's easier than ever to find what you need, helping you to work smarter.

Table 3. New look and shortcuts to open applications
The new Discover page is the first thing you'll see when you first open Notes 9.0. The Discover page has an overview of new features, tips for new and experienced users, and a quick way to open popular and recently-used applications.
Discover page displays. Open What's New tabs. Open For new users tab, open Hints & Tips tab. Open Quick Links tab.
For many features and tips, you can read more, watch a video, or even go right to that feature in Notes.

You can use the Discover page as your home page, the first page to open when you open Notes.
Or if you customize your home page, you can still get back to the Discover page.

Table 4. Find emails quickly
Notes 9.0 also has a new, modern, streamlined look that looks more like other IBM products.

There are new shortcut buttons, that let you open mail, calendar, and other applications.

You can hide these shortcuts, or add your own shortcuts.
Click View -> Show Shortcut Buttons.

In Notes 9.0, you can find emails, calendar entries, and other Notes documents fast. All you need to do is start typing!
For example, if you're looking for an email: In your mail view, start typing the subject, sender's name, or date, and a window will pop up and help you find what you need.
Type-ahead makes it even faster, offering suggestions of what you might be searching for.
Begin typing "Samantha Daryn." Find/Starts with window appears and auto-completes the name. Select the name and click Find. Mail is sorted by Who column and goes to Samantha Daryn’s name.
If you want to search in a different column, or in all columns, choose that option in the Find in field.
Begin typing "sales report." Find/Starts with window appears. In the Find in field, select All Columns.

It's also easier to find emails that you have previously archived.
If you're looking for an email, but aren't sure if it's been archived, you can search your mail and archives at the same time.
Type search terms into the Notes search bar. Click the “Select a search scope” arrow and select All Mail and Archives.

It's also easier to scan for emails, and see what they're about.
Inbox displays, highlight beginning of message.
You can show or hide the beginning of emails in your inbox.
Click Show -> Beginning of message.

To help you organize your calendar, you can color-code your calendar entries by category.
Fade to calendar. Highlight categorized calendar entries in different colors.
If you use categories, you can display categorized entries in different colors.
Open your calendar preferences, add categories, and choose colors.
Click File -> Preferences -> Calendar and To Do -> Colors -> Category Colors. Add the category Project A meetings and choose a color.

In Notes 9.0, many popular preferences are enabled by default. These preferences make mail and calendar more efficient, keep your inbox cleaner, and more.

If your organization has enabled it, you can also open your Workspace and Notes applications in a browser.

You can open your Home page, Workspace, Replication page, or other applications.

If you have the OpenSocial component, you also get better integration with Connections and other websites and programs.
You can see status updates from your Connections network,...
...edit and work with Activities from within Notes,...
… and even work with applications like Connections Profiles from within emails in Notes.

Fade to Activities sidebar. Open an activity, open an entry and edit it.
Fade to email notification that someone has requested to join your network. From inside the email, accept the request and comment on the person's wall.
