I've tried to install for first time Lotus Notes 8.5.3 on Ubuntu 12.10 32bit , in a fresh installation over a laptop and the experience was great than i had expected. This is the deb i've installed Lotus Notes Sametime Activity CAE Feed Reader FP2 All with Ubuntu Software Center At the first run ...

Notes 8.5.3 also came out this time I dedicated to experimentation on 11.10 64-bit but did not go over to get an installation not working
/ Opt / ibm / lotus / notes / notes: error while loading shared libraries: libgconf-2.so.4: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

At this point I use "skillful trick"  suggest me by a  IBMer to switch to the 32bit version with PAE Kernel.
Since version 10.04 when operating system installer detects more than 4GB of ram that will automatically install the kernel that thanks to a 36bit addressing allows to exceed the limit of 4GB, simplifying the management of software are not compatible with 64bit.

At this point, after installing the DEB I served a few additional steps

Download the underlying libraries (for those who are the usual familiar ..) and displacement in the installation
 wget http://www.benkevan.com/upload/lotus_notes/libgdk-x11-2.0.so.0
 wget http://www.benkevan.com/upload/lotus_notes/libgdk_pixbuf-2.0.so.0
 wget http://www.benkevan.com/upload/lotus_notes/libgdk_pixbuf_xlib-2.0.so.0
 wget http://www.benkevan.com/upload/lotus_notes/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0
 sudo mv *. so.0 / opt / ibm / lotus / notes

Make Installation of the following 2 library (you can use apt-get or Synaptic as in my case)
           libgnome2-0
           libgnomeui-0

Now Lotus Notes and every other deb you have installed (like Symphony,Sametime,Feed) shoud work properly!

There are 3 issues in the functioning but I've solvedone.
Using the mail you'll soon realize that from an e-mail will not be able to open an attachment by clicking Open.

To solve this problem

            sudo mv /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/openwith /opt/ibm/lotus/notes/openwith.bak
            sudo ln-s /usr/bin/gnome-open/opt/ibm/lotus/notes/openwith

The second issue I found in the calendar, where where you set up an appointment, nor does clicking on the day nor on the time (pretty simple workaround to select day and time moving with the arrows).

If Keep in Launcher options doesn't mantain the Icon of Lotus Notes after Reboot, you could drag&drop from /usr/share/application the Lotus Notes 8.5 icon to the launcher and all should be ok

At this point your OpenClient is running!

PS:

To verify the kernel running on your machine

uname-r
the answer must be, for example
3.0.0-12-generic-pae

to test the recognition memory can do
   free

and expect a response similar to the following
total used free shared buffers cached
     Mem: 8063464 2082196 5981268 0 137452 1025744

I remind you that Lotus Notes 8.5.3 is certified for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32Bit
