1. Which versions of IBM Domino support use of the Notes Browser Plugin?
The Notes Browser Plug-in 9.0.1 supports working with all older IBM supported Domino servers, for example versions 8.0.2, or 8.5.3. Applications running on any version of the Domino Server can be opened with the Notes Browser Plug-in, but IBM strongly recommends using Domino version 9.0 or higher.
2. How do I install the Notes Browser Plug-in stand-alone?
Notes Browser Plug-in is available to be installed in stand-alone. Installer of Notes Browser Plug-in is a single setup.exe
, so you simply need to run setup.exe
and accept the License agreement.
The installation is done in the default path as follows:
- Program Directory: C:\Program Files(x86)\IBM\Notes
- Data Directory: c:\users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\IBM\Notes\Data
There are two variants of the stand-alone Notes Browser Plug-in installation: NotesPluginMax and NotesPluginMin.
- NotesPluginMin - does not contain attachment viewers, JVM, or spell check.
- NotesPluginMax - JVM is required if you have any application which has a Java Agent in it
Note: By default, this method will always install a multi-user version of the Notes Browser Plug-in. Any data from any existing Notes Client data will be migrated to this new data directory, and the client will be uninstalled.

Yes you can change the default Program directory by providing following command line, which also then does a silent installation:

Notes Browser Plug-in supports the browsers Firefox (from FF 16 to FF 24 ESR) and Internet Explorer(IE 8 to IE11) only.
6. Is the Notes Browser Plug-in available in languages other than English?
The Notes Browser Plug-in is, by default, available only in English. In case you want to use it in any language other than English, you are required to Install the Notes Browser Plug-in MUI package along with the Notes Browser Plug-in.
7. Can I install both Notes Browser Plug-in and Notes Standard Client?
Yes you can install Notes Browser Plug-in along with Standard client. While installing the Standard client option for Notes Browser Plug-in appears as below:
Select the above option and Install the client along with Notes Browser Plug-in.
Note: - No Desktop icon will be created in above case to launch Notes Browser Plug-in. You have to launch either Internet Explorer or Firefox and type in the URL:notes:home
Also, both the Standard client and Notes Browser Plug-in cannot be launched at the same time. You must exit from one Notes client to launch another.
8. When I launch the Notes Browser Plug-in with Firefox as the default browser, it gives me a message that the Add-on is disabled?
If you get the below message when you launch Notes Browser Plug-in with Firefox as default browser:
It indicates that the IBM Notes Browser Plug-in in Firefox is disabled. Open the Add-ons in Firefox (Tools → Add-ons) and enable the Plug-in installed for Notes Browser.
9. After Notes Browser Plug-in install why do I not see message of Add-on enable in FireFox and Notes Browser Plug-in does not launch?
If the Firefox browser was open during the installation of the Notes Browser Plug-in, a situation can arise that, on launching Notes Browser Plug-in, you may not get the message for the disabled Add-on. In the above case, to check if the plugin in Firefox is enabled or not, you can navigate through the Firefox menu “Tools → Add- ons” and enable the Browser Plug- in.
10. How do I configure the Notes Browser Plug-in?
Launch Notes Browser Plug-in through Icon on desktop. It should give you the configuration dialog.(This dialog will appear only if it is a fresh installation and No data folder is present on your machine)
You will need to supply your user information, Domino Server where your mailfile exists, and your Notes ID File. Once the configuration is done the Notes Browser Plug-in home page appears.
11. How can I change location in Notes Browser Plug-in?
The default locations available are Home, Online, or Offline as available in the Standard client. You can change location at launch when Password dialogs appears:
In case you require to create a new location , it can be done by opening the Contacts (local names.nsf) and creating new locations in Advanced Contacts. To login using new Location you have to close Notes Browser Plug-in i.e Browser and re-launch.
12. Where do I find the Data folder in the Notes Browser Plug-in?
As Notes Browser Plug-in is a Multi-user installation, you will find the data folder in the Users directory path C:\Users\\AppData\Local\IBM\Notes\Data\.
You can also find the Notes.ini, bookmarks.nsf, and names.nsf in the same path.
13. How can I access mail in the Notes Browser Plug-in?
In the Notes Browser Plug-in your mail file can be accessed by using Notes web mail. You can access Notes web mail through:
- Icon in NBP
- Mail 'chiclet' in workspace
- Notes Menu File-> Open Inotes
Each of these options will leverage your location document setting to determine the mailfile, and build a HTTP URL to your mail to bring up the Notes web interface.
14. On accessing a mail-based application it gives me the error "Mail operation not supported"?
Notes Browser Plug-in uses the mail file specified in the Location document to determine if the database you are trying to open is your own mail file. If it finds this is the case, it will form a HTTP URL for launching Notes web. For any other mail template-based applications, a new property in “database properties” infobox can be specified to allow or prevent opening inside the Notes Browser Plug-in. Default for the 9.0.1 mail template is to disallow, but your database administrator can change the setting.
With a template older than 9.0.1 you can use a Notes.ini parameter to access mail based applications:

When you install the Notes Browser Plug-in on your system and launch it, Notes Browser Plug-in migrates all of your existing bookmarks from bookmark.nsf to your browser’s favorites. You can check the default bookmarks created in browser Bookmarks or Favorites under the Notes application folder:
16. How do I create bookmarks in the Notes Browser Plug-in?
IBM recommends that any new Notes bookmarks should be created under the “Notes Application” folder in browser’s favorites. This will allow synchronization of these bookmarks back into bookmark.nsf for use with the Notes Client.
17. How can I switch my ID in the Notes Browser Plug-in?
Switching IDs is not allowed inside Notes Browser Plug-in. You can switch the ID only during the launch when the password dialog is displayed (similar to changing location).
For help setting up the Notes Browser Plug-in to connect to SmartCloud Notes, if you uncheck the checkbox during the Notes Browser Plug-in setup (asking if you want to connect to a Domino Server), then the Notes Browser Plug-in does allow a switch of the ID when no other tab besides the Home page is open.
Note: "Switch ID" and "Switch Location" is enabled ONLY at the HOME page, with NO other Tab open, and ONLY When you are in an OFFLINE location (no Domino server specified in the location document)
18. How do I forward a document in the Notes Browser Plug-in / I am getting an error forwarding a document?
Launch the Notes Browser Plug-in in a browser. Open the Notes document to be forwarded. From the menu or context menu, select "Actions -> Forward". Verify that the mail client (Notes Web mail) starts up and a new mail message opens with the forwarded content. Enter the user details in "Send" and send the message. The mail will be received along with the Notes Browser Plug-in document content.
In case your organization is using a Redirector, and you get an error during this operation, you can add the following parameter to your Notes.ini:

20. I am a SmartCloud Notes user; how can I access the Help file in the Notes Browser Plug-in?
For the Notes Browser Plug-in, the product accesses the Help topics from the Domino server. Contact your Domino administrator to share the Help file help9_client.nsf on the server.
Note: In case of SmartCloud, since the SmartCloud server does not have this help file, you can add this on one of your on-premise Domino servers. Be sure to specify the following Notes.ini parameter:

21. I am getting a pop-up error from the Notes Browser Plug-in in Internet Explorer; what do I do next?
If you get an error as below when you launch the Notes Browser Plug-in, this is a warning message which appears due to Protected Mode settings in your IE browser. Notes Browser Plug-in installation modifies the pop-up blocker setting. For this to take effect, you should log off from your system and re-log back in.
