I haven't worked for Lotus long enough to know for certain, but I think Lotus Real-Time Collaboration (RTC) Gateway may be the shortest-lived product name in Lotus history. As of today, it's no longer Lotus RTC Gateway, but Lotus Sametime Gateway. Most product names last at least one version, sometimes two or even 2.6 versions before being changed, but not Lotus RTC Gateway. It lasted less than a week since the time that the gateway shipped.
Naturally, this had me wondering how many things last less than a week. The best example that I can come up with is my cell phone battery. Even the common cold can last longer than seven days. The average life span for a male mosquito is 10 to 20 days. Some biodegradable plastic bags can take as long as 45 days to fully deteriorate. In short, we've known cartons of milk that have lasted longer than the Lotus RTC Gateway product name.
Our quick response team has already updated the site to reflect the name change, so you won't see reference to Lotus RTC Gateway in many places, though you will still find it.
If you're a Lotus Sametime V7.5 customer, looking for information about the gateway, here are a few places to start:
- developerWorks Lotus Sametime Gateway page
- Lotus Sametime product marketing page
- Lotus Support technote, "IBM Lotus Real-Time Collaboration Gateway"
