The right to blog does not automatically include the right to be taken seriously.

Many IBMers are already using early versions of Lotus Notes 8, code-named Hannover. I need to get going and join the ranks because today I saw a feature I want everyone to start using -- the enhanced Out of Office!

I sent a question to our colleague Ed Brill. Because he's traveling, I got his Out of Office reply. Not only did I get the response almost immediately, but it told me the following:

Note: This is an automated response to your message Question for you sent on 11/30/06 9:45:12.
This is the only notification you will receive while this person is away.
YES!! Just the feature I've been looking for!

It seems to happen all the time that I receive Out of Office replies for people I've never heard of, and I can't remember what email I sent them -- probably because it was some reply-to-all situation. It seems I get their Out of Office reply the day after I send my email because most users set their Out of Office agent to the default schedule of once a day.

Now, here are all the disclaimers about discussing unreleased software. I can't guarantee the Out of Office feature will be delivered exactly like this in the final product. But at Lotusphere 2006, Julie Kadashevich discussed future plans for the Out of Office feature in Lotus Notes/Domino 8 as part of her Demystifying the IBM Lotus Notes Out of Office Agent presentation, so I can tell you it's being worked on. And I can't wait to start using it.
