<description><![CDATA[I wouldn't mention this because it feels 'off topic'; but we use the Discussion template like Andreas mentioned. We use it as a document repository and find it works better than the Document library template (because we don't need all the workflow and approval stuff).<br /><br />We have added a "type field" to the Main Topic form and then created views that display documents only of each type. Then added some navigation on the left for each view.<br /><br />Sorry this doesn't answer how we might use it for 'discussions'; but this is our most extensive use of the template.]]></description>

But in my mind both forums and discussions have a lot of commonalities while forums are more public facing and discussions are rather internal. Would be great to build a next generation of the discussion template in such a way that a forum db could be an extension to it with additional features like spam protection, page visits counter, etc.]]></description>
