Inside Mobile Design and User Experience

Thoughts on mobile and social business applications, design, and user experience, by Chris Reckling.

When we released the Connections apps for iOS, Blackberry, and Android this summer, we held back on releasing an iPad specific app. As lead designer, Marty Moore, has pointed out on his blog, trying to make a phone app expand to fit the larger screen just doesn't work very well. So, we took the time to make an iPad specific UI. An update is available in the Apple app store today. Congratulations to Marty and the dev and PM teams!

If you have a Greenhouse account, then you can use it against that server to try it out. Just put in greenhouse.lotus.com in the server field.

Here are a couple of screens to whet your appetite. This first one shows the app after you've logged in. Log in information is saved, as before.

You can see that a lot of the navigation on the left has been updated, so you can quickly get to where you need to go. When you get to a detail page, then the view on the right shows the content from the server. There is the usual integration with the camera, for example, in Files.

Files also gives you a chance to utilize the built-in iOS "Open in..." command, so you can send a file to another program and back to Connections as a new version. If an editor you use on the iPad also supports the "Open in..." interface, then you can send the file to Connections and upload it. Goodreader, for example, does this well.

Update your app now and you'll be able to enjoy all the new goodness on your iPad today. Or go look at the screens in the app store.
