Inside Mobile Design and User Experience

Thoughts on mobile and social business applications, design, and user experience, by Chris Reckling.

Image:IBM Project Vulcan at Lotusphere As you probably know, last year at Lotusphere 2010 IBM introduced a vision for the future of collaboration, called IBM Project Vulcan. I led the team that put that demo together, and it really was a team effort across the organization, to express in visuals (and code) what we see as a new way to work - what is now called "social business". We talked about 4 principles guiding us: Continuity, Convergence, Opportunities, and Innovation. I'm not going to recap all of that. Press release here. Video here. It's easy enough to find.

Over the course of the last year, back in the labs all over the world, we have been refining and defining what it means to make this vision a reality. The Continuity principle says that we will enhance our existing product line so that you can enjoy the benefits of the vision as you upgrade and deploy the software in your own infrastructure (or on LotusLive). There are a number of technology initiatives in support of the mission that you will most likely hear about at Lotusphere 2011, in the keynote, in strategy talks, in technical product talks, and in the various labs. (Ed Brill already posted something about one of the first deliverables, a toolkit for developers to interact with the activity stream backend.)

Here's my handy guide to IBM Project Vulcan activity at Lotusphere. I expect that many sessions will make reference to the project, especially the strategy and product roadmap types, so go to those, too, especially App Dev (INV107) and Mobile (INV108).

INV104 IBM Project Vulcan: Blueprint to Integrate the IBM Collaboration Portfolio - and Beyond
Speakers: Scott Prager, Charlie Hill
DL N. Hemisphere A-E - Tuesday  1:30pm - 2:30pm
This will be the overview of all the initiatives I referenced above (at least what we can say publicly).

AD501 IBM Project Vulcan: The IBM Collaboration Toolkit
Speaker: Bill Looby
SW 5-6 - Tuesday  4:45pm - 5:45pm
This session goes into details about the toolkit apis, use cases, and future enhancements. Bill is the tech lead for the toolkit, from our Dublin lab.

BOF102 IBM Project Vulcan: Enabling Exceptional Work Experiences
Speakers: Scott Prager, Jason Roy Gary
SW Mockingbird - Tuesday  5:45pm - 6:45pm
Scott and Jason have been the driving technical forces behind the project. Give us some feedback!

Labs It's hard to separate out what is Project Vulcan and what is product at this go to the labs and explore, especially our UX Lab. :)
Meet the Developer Lab - There will be some folks who have worked on the technical initiatives as well as developers from all the product groups.
User Experience Lab - Come see the latest iteration of the designs for Notes, Connections, Sametime, Portal, iNotes, Symphony, etc. Let's just say it's not what we demo'd last year. :) We've also been doing some advance work on social analytics (see Innovation principle) that we'd like to explore with you.
Collaborative Solutions Development Lab - Dolphin - Product Showcase. I'm pretty sure this lab will give you some hands on with the toolkit as well as some other cool things, like maybe an xpages app?

That's it for today! I'll have another post soon about my new assignment this year and other happenings in the lab.
