An article was just published on developerWorks that discusses how to run server-side JavaScript......on WebSphere. So, you can do what the article suggests to set up your environment and go back and forth from Java to JavaScript (I don't know, looks more like Java to me, but I'm not a guy who lives in an IDE.), or you could just install Domino 8.5 and use the xpages engine. Clearly, the devworks article is aimed at the Java developer audience, while Domino Designer makes it possible for a novice to intermediate developer to get started. Advanced programmers can go wild and extend their apps using Java if they want to.
Of course, the Domino engine can also mix and match native Java calls, JavaScript, and "@functions" particular to calling the Domino backend. LotusScript, anyone? I don't know what those plans are, but a good question to ask at Lotusphere.
