Hi Oliver,
When you go into the WAS Admin console make sure you are looking at the right 'context'. There should be 3 to choose from: Cell, Node, Server. If this is a single server install, the JDBC Data Source should be created at the Node level, otherwise it'll be at the cell level.
Also, check the install logs. This happened to me once when I was installing Lotus Connections and the LDAP went down and I didn't know (the installation process requires authentication to create the JDBC data sources).
