The common rendering engine (CRE) is a shared component that IBM software programs such as IBM
® Connections use to provide support for rendering various widget models, including iWidgets and OpenSocial gadgets.
The CRE is not a product and cannot be downloaded or installed as a separate unit. The CRE can be configured only in the context of the product that contains it. In cases where you simply want to host gadgets, see the Apache Shindig and Apache Rave websites.
The CRE is designed as a system with a small client-side base, an extensible set of client-side services, and a configurable set of server-side plug-ins. When developing for a product that contains the CRE, you can use these client-side services to extend and customize the CRE and provide additional functionality in the client.
The CRE supports OpenSocial gadgets through Apache Shindig 2.0. Shindig is an open-source project at the Apache Software Foundation that provides code for rendering gadgets on web pages, fulfilling proxy requests, and running the APIs that are required for hosting OpenSocial applications. Shindig provides a reference implementation of the OpenSocial specification.
