Using compressed images reduces load and run time, simply because bigger files take longer to read and transmit across a network.
For this reason, it’s best to use a compressed image format, such as PNG or JPEG. This will keep the overall size of the form down, and will help to reduce load times. BMP is a particularly bad image format.

Gif image support is limited to images that do not contain animation, transparency, or interlacing. Furthermore, some types of progressive JPG images are not supported.
