Lotus Quickr can be used to collaborate on documents across an enterprise.
Since Quickr makes it easy to share documents, it is especially important to assure that documents are free from viruses
This articles describes an example of how ScanMail Suite for Lotus Domino, a product from Trend Micro, can be used to protect Quickr Document Places from viruses.
Having purchased and installed Trend Micro’s ScanMail Suite for Lotus Domino, you notice that the ScanMail databases are installed into the smd subdirectory in your Lotus Domino server and that ScanMail tasks are started when the Domino Server is started. The first thing you should do is sign the ScanMail’s configuration database using the Domino Administrator.
Now, just for test purposes, let’s ‘inject’ a virus into a Lotus Quickr place. The safest way to do this is to first download a benign test virus from a location like http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm
In this example, I have downloaded a virus that is wrapped in a compress file, named eicar_com.zip
I can check that into a Quickr place, using the usual upload button.
Opening smconf.nsf allows you to configure ScanMail to scan Quickr databases. From the main page in the Configuration Database, select Actions
and then Manual Scan
. Then you can select the databases to scan. In this example, I am picking the main database for the Quickr place in which I just uploaded the virus (the virus is living in that database as an attachment).
Then I click Scan Now
and see that the scan has been started
Watching the Domino console shows the scan has detected the virus and quarantined it.
You can then go into the Infected Attachments
view to see the virus that was just detected.
Now, look at the attachment in Quickr…
If you downloaded and opened this attachment, you would find that it was no longer a compressed file with a virus in it. Instead it has been replaced with a bitmap that looks like this…
This bitmap comes from the file
Going back into the ScanMail configuration database and opening the Manual Deletion View
allows you to delete the quarantined attachments
