Plug-in Description:
IBM Connections is social software for business that lets you access everyone in your professional network, including your colleagues, customers, and partners.
Profiles: Find the people you need by searching across your organization using tags to identify expertise, current projects, and responsibilities.
Activities: Organize your work, plan your next steps, tap your professional network, and gather information to meet business objectives.
Blogs: Gather and prioritize community ideas, present your own ideas, and learn from others.
Wikis: Create web content together, edit, and publish it in a convenient location with access that you manage.
Communities: Exchange and share information with others through a web browser, IBM Sametime, or email software.
Files: Post, share, and discover documents, presentations, images, and more.
Bookmarks: Save, share, and discover bookmarks through this social bookmarking service.
The IBM Connections Connector plug-in lets you add Lotus Symphony files to an activity or a files, create To Dos for activity users, post a Symphony document to a blog or a wiki, or search IBM Connections for a person's profile or other content.
Before you use the IBM Connections plug-in, you must configure the services so that you can access the servers for the IBM Connections applications that you plan to use. For example, to post a document to an activity you must supply the URL for an activity server that you can access. You must also supply the user name and password that you use for IBM Connections. If you do not have this information, see your site administrator.
After you are configured, you can:

Add a Lotus Symphony document to a IBM Connections activity, blog, or wiki.

Create a To Do item for an activity.

Add a Spreadsheet or Presentation document to an activity.
-
Add a URL as a IBM Connections bookmark.
-
Insert data from a IBM Connections profile into a Lotus Symphony documents.
-
Open and share files in IBM Connections files.

How to use the plug-in
Configuring the IBM Connections Plug-in for Lotus Symphony
To configure the IBM Connections plug-in for Lotus Symphony, you must know the URLs for the IBM Connections servers and the user name and password that you use to access IBM Connections.
Procedure

Start Lotus Symphony Application.

Click File -> Preferences -> Symphony -> Connections
-
Enter URLs for the servers that you plan to use.
If you do not know the server URLs, contact your IBM Connections administrator. Use the following syntax to specify the server web address:
https://
For example:https://enterprise.example.com

Enter the user name and password that you use to access IBM Connections.
If you do not know them, ask your Lotus Connections administrator.

Specify the authentication type and URL you are using from the following choices:

Click Apply to save your changes.
Searching for a profile and inserting data into a document
From any Lotus Symphony document, you can search on peoples names to find their profile. You can insert data from a profile into a document.
Procedure

Open a Lotus Symphony document and click in the document where you want to insert profile data.

Click IBM Connections -> Search Profiles... from menu or toolbar

Type part of a name or email address into the name field. The type-ahead feature returns all possible matches.

Select the profile that you want.
-
Right click and then select the field to insert the profile data into the document.
Adding a Lotus Symphony files to an activity
You can add a Lotus Symphony file to an activity to share it with other activity users.
Procedure
-
Open a document in Lotus Symphony.

Click Add Content To … -> Activity...
The name for the activity posting is completed by default with the file name. You can edit this name if you want.

Add tags.
Tags are keywords that you assign to describe your posting. Tags must be entered as a single word, separated by commas or spaces.

Do one of the following:

Select an existing activity.
-
Create an activity. Assign a name and optionally fill out the Tags and Activity Goal field for the activity. You can also assign a due date and invite users to join the activity.

Mark the entry as private if you do not want other users to view it in the activity.

Click OK to save the file to the selected activity.
When you open the activity, your file is available as an entry.
Adding a Lotus Symphony document to a blog or a wiki
In addition to posting a Lotus Symphony document to an activity, you can post a Lotus Symphony document to a IBM Connections blog or wiki, share it with blog readers or with wiki members.
Procedure

Open a Lotus Symphony document.

To add the document to a blog:

Click IBM Connections -> Add Content to -> Blog...
The name for the entry is completed by default with the file name. You can edit this name if you want.

Select the name of the blog where you want to post this entry.

Add tags.
Tags are keywords you assign to describe your posting. Tags must be entered as a single word, separated by commas or spaces. Payroll, human-resources, and event_planing are examples of valid tag formats.

Click Save as draft if you want to save the entry to the blog without publishing it for others to read.

Click Preview to see how the entry looks.

Click OK to add the document as a blog entry.

To add the document to a wiki:
-
Click Add Content to -> Wiki...
The name for the entry is completed by default with the file name. You can edit this name if you want.

Select the name of the wiki where you want to post this entry.

Click OK to add the new page to the wiki.
Creating to-dos in an Activity
Creating a to-do list in Lotus Symphony Document is a great shortcut for quickly creating action items. When you create a to-do list and post it to an activity, each item is posted as a separate to do. You can then go into the activity and assign the to-do items to activity users.
Procedure

Open a document in Lotus Symphony.

To create multiple to-dos, do the following:
-
Create a list with each to do on its own line.

Select the list.
-
Click IBM Connections and select Add To Do Items... from menu or toolbar.

Do one of the following:
-
Select an existing activity.
-
Create an activity. Assign a name and optionally fill out the Tags and Activity Goal field for the activity. You can also assign a due date and invite users to join the activity.

If you did not start with a to-do list, you can enter one or more to-dos now, or you can add to the list.
-
Click More Options to do any of the following:
-
Enter a name in the Assigned to field to assign the to do to another activity member
-
Enter a Due date when the to do should be completed.
-
Enter a Description for the to do.
-
Assign one or more Tags to categorize the to do item.
-
Mark the to do as private if you do not want other members to see it.

Click OK to save the to do to the selected activity.
Adding bookmarks from a Lotus Symphony document
This feature allows you to share a bookmark with IBM Connections users.
Procedure

To add a bookmark to your collection or share it with other Connections members, click IBM Connections and select Add Bookmark...
Complete the following fields:

Add a title for the bookmark.

Add an optional description.
-
Select whether to create the bookmark as a public bookmark that everyone can access, as a private bookmark that only you can access, or add the bookmark to another IBM Connections application.
Adding/Opening files to/from IBM Connections
Add a file to files to share it with other IBM Connections users. Open a file from your IBM Connections File. It is a great shortcut for sharing documents that you have created and stored locally with IBM Connections users.
Procedure

Open a files in Lotus Symphony.

Click IBM Connections and select Open and Share Files...
-
Double click the file that you want to open it in Lotus Symphony.

Right-click the file that you want to add open it in Lotus Symphony or share it with other IBM Connections user.

Click IBM Connections -> Add Content To... -> Files... to upload the current opened file to IBM Connections Files.
