Opening an existing document

To open an existing document, there are several ways:
  1. When you have already opened IBM Lotus Symphony, do one of the following steps to display the Open dialog:
    • Choose File -> Open
    • Click the Open icon on the Standard toolbar
    • Press Ctrl+O
      Or:
      • Drag and drop the file to a tab or an empty workbench
  2. When you do not have IBM Lotus Symphony opened, right-click the file you want to open and selectOpen or Open with -> IBM Lotus Symphony.

Opening a document in a child window

The window when you first open IBM Lotus Symphony is called the main window or the parent window, which has a tab line and always a home page. To open a document in a child window (that is independent from the main window), right-click the tab of the document and select Open in New Window.

The following rules apply to opening an existing document or creating a new document:
  • If you open or create a document from a child window, the document will be opened or created in another child window.
  • If you open or create a document from the parent window, the document will be opened or created as a new tab in the parent window.
  • If you directly open a document by double-clicking or right-clicking it, the document will be opened as a tab in the parent window by default.
  • Ctrl+click the Internet hyperlink in a document which is opened in the child window, the web page will be opened in another child window.
  • Open in New Window is not available when you have any dialog boxes displayed.
  • When there is any moduless window or floating window which hasn't been shut down manually in the document, open in new window doesn't work.
The following rules apply to closing the windows:
  • Closing the parent window causes the child windows to be closed too.
  • Closing only the child windows has no effect on the parent window.

Restrict Files to Display

To restrict the display of files in the Open dialog to a certain type select the corresponding File type from the list. Select All Files (*.*) to display all files.

Cursor Position

In general, all documents open with the cursor at the start of the document.

One exception appears when the author of a Lotus® Symphony™ Documents Lotus Symphony document saves and reopens a document: The cursor will be at the same position where it has been when the document was saved. This only works when the name of the author was entered in File - Preferences - Symphony - User Data.
Press Shift+F5 to set the cursor to the last saved position.

Opening an Empty Document

Click the New icon on the Standard bar or choose File - New. This opens a document of the document type specified.

System File Dialogs or Lotus Symphony Dialogs

On most operating systems, you can choose to use the system file dialogs or Lotus Symphony dialogs.
Choose File - Preferences - Symphony - General to switch the type of open/save dialogs.
The Lotus Symphony dialogs support file download and upload using secure https connections.

Opening Files from a Web Server

You can enter a URL in the File name box of the Open dialogs. The URL must start with file:/ or ftp:// or http://.

If you use the Lotus Symphony dialog, you can use the https:// prefix for a secure connection, and you can save a document on the web server.
Warning Icon When you open a file by a URL from the Windows file dialog, Windows will open a local copy of the file, located in the Internet Explorer cache. The Lotus Symphony file dialog opens a local copy of the file in the system's temp folder.
