Mashup Center now supports OpenSocial gadgets for mashup applications. As part of the default installation package, Mashup Center includes four gadgets in the palette.
Mashup Center supports OpenSocial
gadgets through the Apache Shindig 2.0 container, which is deployed at the time Mashup Center is installed. This Shindig container provides the code that is necessary to render OpenSocial gadgets in your mashup applications. The Shindig container is an implementation of the OpenSocial Specification 1.0
Mashup Center includes four sample gadgets in the catalog. These gadgets are available in the Components
view in the palette along with the default widgets that are located in the catalog. Users can add other gadgets to the palette by locating them in the catalog and adding them to the mashup builder.
Unlike widgets, gadgets do not support the sending and receiving of events through a wiring interface. In order to configure broadcast events for gadgets, developers can use the sample subscriber and publisher demo gadgets that are located on the Mashup Center server to understand how to use APIs to create support for eventing. For more information, see Using broadcast events to allow communication between widgets and gadgets
In addition to not supporting eventing, gadgets differ from widgets in how their user preferences are handled. User preferences and configuration options for gadgets are handled in the gadget's user interface and definition itself. For this reason, users who are working with gadgets on a page will not see editing, configuring, and personalizing options in the display menu for the gadgets. They will only see basic positioning options such as maximize and minimize.
