This topic describes the difference between editing and configuring widgets. It also describes how users can personalize widget settings that apply only to them.
Editing and configuring widgets
You can edit and configure settings for many of the Mashup Center default widgets. Editing and configuring widgets are two separate actions with different purposes. When you edit settings for a widget, you define properties for the individual widget instance on the mashup page. These settings apply to that instance of the widget only and not to other instances that you use either on the same page or on other pages. For example, if your mashup application contains multiple pages, and you want each page to display a weather widget, you can edit each widget instance to show the weather for a different home city. These widget settings are not global across pages. You can edit settings at the widget instance level by opening the contextual menu for the widget and selecting Edit Settings
When you configure settings for a widget, you define properties at the widget definition level. This means that all instances of that widget that you use from that point forward persist the changes that you make. Settings that you configure at the definition level override any settings that users make at the instance level. Using the weather widget example above, if you configure a widget instance with a particular location, every time you drag another widget onto that same page or onto a different page, the widget will be configured to display the weather conditions for that location. You can configure settings for widgets at the definition level by opening the contextual menu for the widget and selecting Configure

In most cases, the options for editing and configuring widgets are the same. You can define a particular file or feed URL so that the widget knows from where to pull data. You can configure style properties that define how the widgets should display in the mashup application. Style properties include filtering and sorting information in tables, highlighting rows of data and adding titles, adding colors and images, and more. For more advanced widgets, you can create scripts to transform and convert data based on a condition that you specify. Because each widget is unique, the settings vary from widget to widget.

When you personalize a widget, you define properties that apply only to you. For example, the default Feed Reader
widget may display 10 rows of data. However, if you only want to see five rows, you can personalize the widget to show only those five rows. If you subsequently add the widget to the catalog or share the widget with others, they will continue to see the 10 rows that is defined at the widget definition level. Other users will not see any of the personalization settings that you have defined for the widget. You can personalize settings for a widget by opening the contextual menu for the widget and selecting Personalize
