Use the Substring function to return a portion, or substring, of a character string.
For the Value
for each of the parameters you can:
- Specify a text value.
- Specify a function value.
- Use a variable to return the value.
- Specify a value from the Input tree.
The character string that you want to return from the substring from.Start
The specific position, represented by a number, in the Input that you want the substring to start. If you specify zero or a negative number, only the characters in positions greater than zero are returned. Length
The number of characters from the Start that you want to return. The characters returned do not extend beyond the length of the character string.
The Input value is a list of addresses that include postal codes for European countries. Most of the postal codes start with two letters followed by five digits. To extract just the digits, you specify the Start value 3
and the Length value 5
. However, the country of Luxembourg only uses four digits. Even though the Length value is 5
, only four digits are returned for the postal codes from Luxembourg.
