There are disadvantages to storing the UNID as a reference even within the same database; I think you might like to consider alternative design approaches.
What happens if you get a replication conflict? There's an original document and a conflict document. One of them has the original UNID, one doesn't. If you resolve the conflict by deleting the original document, you've invalidated all your references to it.
UNIDs are also not a lot of use in categorized views for the user to see. If you're going to store a value it might as well be a value that has some potential usefulness in other contexts.
I prefer to use a key value in the document's data to maintain a relationship with other documents.
