The problem occurs after 30 minutes of inactivity of the Notes client.
Interestingly, NETSTAT on the workstation reports a connection to Domino with a persistence of 30 minutes (after last used) and the it goes into TIME_WAIT for a couple of minutes before disappearing.
When I try to open my DB (after > 30 minutes of inactivity) it fails with the posted problem. NETSTAT now shows that connection as FIN_WAIT_1
When I immediately try it again the DB works fine and NETSTAT shows a new connection (local address) "ESTABLISHED" with the old one still in FIN_WAIT_1
This 30 minutes is the default Windows connection timeout interval after which TCP enters the TIME_WAIT state for a couple of minutes before closing and disappearing.
Although the default value for TCP timeout is 30 minutes and "the problem" happens at 30 minutes I could not get an exact time correlation for the two events using NETSTAT. Although it seems like it, I cannot be 100% sure that the default Windows TCP Timeout is related to the issue. Meaning that if the Windows registry entry for the TCP timeout value was changed to say 60 minutes then it may also change the frequency of the problem to 60 minutes. Even if true I don't think a global change from say 30 minutes to eg. 10 hours is desireable. You can't adjust it in the registry by application either, so overall I would assume that this path is a dead end in terms of problem resolution. That is unless Domino/Notes has a technique of only modifying the persistence of the connection for its own application, that may be useful.
