I've just taken a call from IBM Support who have now come up with another idea.

Apparently the notes.ini setting SERVER_SESSION_TIMEOUT did not work properly under R5 and usually did not drop any sessions.

They think what is happening is that the server is now dropping the client but the client has not realised its been dropped and then tries to open an existing session which does not exist. They also think the problem most likely will lie with clients that are not locked (I haven't been able to confirm this one way or the other - most problem machines have not been locked).

I have now upped the SERVER_SESSION_TIMEOUT to 480 (ie 8 hours or a normal working day) to see what difference is made. This would explain why we never see the problem with our mail server as the clients are polling for new mail every 15 mins. Changing this setting does require a server restart even if you use a configuration document/set config command to set it.

I'll update sometime on Monday with whether or not its helped the problem.
