It seems, that on some configurations my script solution does not work any more.
Unfortunately I have no idea (at the moment) what the problem is...
I tried to re-save the script as "Script Application Bundle" - this does result in a proper first time launch of the script (and will open the URL in Safari, too). But any further launches of the app don’t work.
If you are happy with the app relaunching each time, you can simple save it as app bundle without the stay open option.
