Wow, I can't believe I missed this thread! That being said, I don't have much to add that hasn't already been stated.
First of all, Mark, this is a fantastic undertaking.
Secondly, I'm on-board with Stan's "2+5" preference. Control is a good thing.
Thirdly, I don't think bandwidth should be that large of a concern. The target browser audience that will actually support the bulk of this HTML/CSS when it's finished (I'm assuming post-R8) should support HTTP 1.1 compression.
DWA/iNotes now has HTTP compression enabled by default, and you can "hack" it into other DBs (though it can be prone to crashing on certain DBs from what I've read). I would guess that IBM will continue to move this forward so that the core HTTP server will support compression outside of DWA/iNotes for any HTTP traffic. At that point verbose in-line CSS styling doesn't cost much.
