While opening a database will work, it is an expensive operation. I did some checking with agent profilier, and the opend of a db was something like 1,500 msec and this one was about 150 msec.

Function comCheckServerFailure(strServerToCheck As String) As Integer
'
' Return False if the server is up
' return True if the Server is down
'
' So to make life easier for the developer what we will do is if the parameter
' is not blank, then use that to check, else user dbCurrent.server

Dim s As NotesSession

Dim adminP As NotesAdministrationProcess

Dim strServer As String

Dim strErrorMsg As String

On Error GoTo errorHandler

Set s = New NotesSession

If strServerToCheck = "" Then
strServer = s.currentDataBase.server
Else
strServer = strServerToCheck
End If
Set adminP = s.CreateAdministrationProcess( strServer )
comCheckServerFailure = False
Exit Function

errorHandler:
Select Case Err
Case 4000
comCheckServerFailure = True
Case Else
strErrorMsg = Error$ & " (" & Err & ")" & LF & LF & _
"Module: " & LSI_Info( 2) & " at line: " & Erl & LF & _
"Calling Module: " & LSI_Info( 12) & " from line: " & LSI_Info( 430)
MsgBox strErrorMsg, MB_ICONSTOP, "Unexpected Error"
End Select
Resume exitFunction

exitFunction:
End Function
