I fixed it myself, just forgot to post back. I had temporily moved the following lines up and forgot to move them back down. That is what the error was trying to tell me. Duh!
mailDoc = New NotesDocument(db)
Dim rtitem As NotesRichTextItem
Set rtitem = New NotesRichTextItem( maildoc, "Body")
