Thanks. I'll let the client decide whether it will be a mouse-over feature in READ mode or a click in Edit Mode.
However, there's still some unresolved weirdness... There's a strange effect with a NAMES Computed field with one name in it: in my documents, the hotspot shows $UpdatedBy names in the Hotspot area (instead of the hotspot text). Another similar NAMES field that is editable shows the Hotspot text on click.
