Notes Client All Releases All Platforms

Currently we have an R6.5 Domino mail server and Lotus client versions are a mix of R6 & R7. In the near future my company unfortunately will be decommissioning the server hardware and Domino components. We intend to allow the users to still read their old mail files via the Lotus client (in disconnected island mode) so the NSF's essentially will be acting as an archive of old messages. There will be no Domino mail server on the back end, so it's understood they cannot send, receive, forward, etc. Basically it'll just be reading old mail and doing searches via Lotus Notes.

We have to move the mailfiles off the current Domino server. If we needed to do this in the past (i.e. a user's mailfile hogging up too much space) we transferred it to their local pc hard drive and had Lotus directly open it up from there. But there are too many mailfiles to do it this way for every individual user. The simplest method I see is to transfer all the mailfiles to a Windows file server (which we have plenty of).

My question is are there known problems (performance or otherwise) with having Lotus clients directly access their mailbox over a WAN mapped drive on a windows file server (i.e. \\fileserver\johndoe.nsf). Thanks for your help.
