Hi Kjeld,
The Server compares the password stored in the ID file to the most recent password held in the "Password Digest" of the Person Document for that ID file. The Password Digest holds upto 50 previously used passwords.
Check the Admin Help topic "Verifying user passwords during authentication". Pretty cooooool!!
