Subject: Email duplications in users mail database

At a bit of a loss over this one. I have a user that has had this ongoing problem with emails seemingly self duplicating in his mail database. Some emails end up with 100's of copies over night. In total there can be 1000's of duplicated emails every day!
The original email is generally in the users inbox folder but the duplicates are not assigned to any folders and can only be seen in the "All Documents" view. The copies are exact copies and the only difference I can find is that the copies have the users name as the last entry in the "Updated By" which makes me think it is something he is doing that is causing it.
I at first thought it was a rogue rule or agent so removed all the rules in his mail database, when that didnt work I recreated the users mail database from scratch with a different file name and updated the users person document to point to the new file but now the new file has the same problem so it does not appear to be a database corruption. (the old file no longer is seeing duplications).
The duplications seem to appear after hours so I suspect whatever is causing it is client based and remote to the office but I am not sure how to troubleshoot this? The user is a bit clueless and not very helpful when it comes to troubleshooting. I have disabled POP on the server and disabled IMAP for this users database that did not change anything.
Is there a way to block access to a mail database for a single user when the originating connection is not on the LAN subnet? Any other suggestions?
