So given that others were able to make it work using the console install, I gave it another shot...
Uninstalled GUI install using instructions linked in thread. Then typed:
su -
./setup.sh
The install started, but the stream of messages metioned that it could not find "/root/install.xml", as another message in this thread mentioned. So, I copied install.xml to /root and while I was at it I created /etc/lotus . Reran the install and ran through the install, accepting the defaults for everything.
Install finished. Started client, and was given the pernames.ntf error. Changed the permissions of /etc/lotus as per previous message. Reran the client. Same Generic LSE Failure message.
So, different install but same results. I'm pretty much out of options. It sure seems like those that have it working have something that's different from the standard Feisty configuration. Mine is 100% stock: I just reloaded, no VMWare, etc.
