One of the much improved features in Notes 8.5.1 is the way that we handle hyperlinks. It's much easier to add a hyperlink to an email or any Notes document. First, copy the URL that you'd like to add as a hyperlink from the address tab in your browser..
Then, select the text to which you'd like to add a hyperlink to in your email or Notes document...
And choose Hyperlink from the drop-down menu (or click the icon in the toolbar ).
Click on the paste icon in the resulting dialog box.
And the copied URL will be pasted into the Link field.
When you click on OK, the selected text in your email of Notes document will now have the link to the URL (turning blue).
How easy is that?!

So what is the difference between this and the Hotspot - URLLink?
When would I use one over the other? Just curious.
Thanks.
Is it possible with Notes 8.5.1 to _open/click_ a link during edit mode? (without copy/paste)
This is no more efficient that Create>Hotspot>Link Hotspot and paste the URL in the resulting dialog box.
@3 - Perhaps, but at least it uses industry-standard terminology. Users seem to understand what a "hyperlink" is and are used to seeing the link icon (in the toolbar button) in other products.
I don't have either the drop down menu or the link icon showing. How do I get them to show up?
@Denny: They accomplish the same thing...I use URLLink because it's fewer clicks
@Mark: this is new in 8.5.1. Are you using 8.5.1?
Good to know
I'm afraid still not as easy as other mail clients - where you simply paste ... or would that be too easy? .. ;)
Eric: Sorry it took so long to reply, I'm using 8.5 not 8.5.1 so that explains it.
uuuu... super mega fitcha!!!
how to use database resource images on page/form trough <img source='...'> ???
@Greg: you can copy and paste links, this is for those times when you want to hide the URL string (normally, because of its length)...and remember, Notes is not just a mail client, this stems from the ability to use text or graphics as a hyperlink to other resources
how to use hyperlink to open pdf file?
When we lost Outlook and switched to Lotus Notes, I was resolved to try to find 1 nice thing about LN that I could be positive about each day. I was stumped after the first day (I like the 'Send As Is' button). Now you have given me some new hope about LN to try -- we'll see what's allowed on our corporate network. Thanks.
Mmm, seems we are only using 8.5 still. Oh well.
@James: A lot of our tips *do* work for 8.5. If it says 8.5.1, obviously not, but the rest of them work in 8.5. Enjoy!
Could you point me to the documentationon doing this from a script? I have a VB script that will generate a series of emails from an excel spread sheet but I can;t get it to properly format a URL as a hyperlink if I include it in the body text.
nice article. keep post like this...
This is ridiculous. I should just be able to paste the link into the email and have it appear as a clickable link.
Even a 2 year old knows what a hyperlink is these days. How come Lotus Notes needs to be told what it is ?
All I can find is information on how to add a hyperlink in Lotus Notes. How about how to edit the stupid thing after you add it. Hyperlink is grayed out after you add it. I end up having to retype the text and add a new link rather than just changing the one I already created. Very frustrating.
Hi Maery,
You can always right click on hyperlink text and select 'Hotspot properties' to edit the url value.
Why doesn't bracketing a link in carats work? <link> works in most programs, but not lotus notes.
hey guys, I am a new bie to lotus notes. Can any 1 help me in figuring out whats going wrong when i open a web link in notes 8.5 which is more than 1kb and its opening only till 1024bytes. I can literally see it when the link gets opened in IE 8. what is the problem ?? the same thing working fine in notes 6.5. can any 1 help me in this regard!!! Thanx in advance.
did the procedure described above
result: link is not clickable !!
It's actually not that easy. Having to google for an explanation for an easy task like this one and then having to navigate through menus. The way every other email application handles this is through the TEXT-CONTEXT menu, where it would be intuitive.
