IBM® WebSphere® Portlet Factory applications are simply a coordinated set of files that are used to regenerate applications at design time, when you publish to development servers, or export a completed project to a production server.

Like any development effort, the WebSphere Portlet Factory project and application files should be placed under a source control system (for example, CVS, SourceSafe, and Rational® ClearCase®). Placing these files under source control allows you to version them and protect them from loss. Placing files under source control consists of the following activities.
  • Locating and laying out a project for source control management.
  • Deciding what artifacts to version.
  • Managing code for distribution.
    • Management of code for distribution: wpf7
Like most portlets, web applications and widgets, WebSphere Portlet Factory applications are distributed (or published) as WARs.

Locating and layingout a project for source control management: wpf7
You can use two basic approaches when translating this project structure to source control.

      Versioning artifacts: wpf7
If you want the ability to recreate the application over the long term, it is important to capture all of the artifacts used by the project.
