The Annotations engine
is responsible for obtaining information about saved annotations, user data related to annotations, file attachments included with annotations, and archive logs.
A persistence manager is responsible for storing annotations, user data, file attachments, and archive logs. Storage in XML files is the default, but for production environments, you should use a database persistence manager

Annotations, when configured to use alerting
, depend on the Alerts engine. The Annotations engine supports Java-based alert evaluators.
