Re: Developing multi-locale Web sites with IBM Web Content Manager 7.0 and rendering plug-ins

Hello David,

Actually what you mentioned as problems with this solution I consider key strength.

1- The content item will be saved once so you will go through the process of creating/modifying content item once instead of doing it and facing the same headache once per language supported.

2- Adding all supported languages to content item will have minor impact on the content item saving time, because how much bytes in your opinion will be added to content item per supported language ?

3- Saving time is a matter of performance tuning on database and wcm engine

4- I think it is better for end user to see all supported languages in one place, this will be easier to modify and save all changes once.

5- This solution has been applied to a production environment of a very high frequency of user visits and content updates and we have never faced performance problems related to this solution.

At end I would like to say that I didn't try your solution yet but I will and I'm very thankful to have an official WCM Multilingual solution in place at last. But for sure having 2 solutions is better than having only one and in technical design there is no 100% right or 100% wrong, there are always pros and cons.

And thanks for ur feedback anyway.

Re: Developing multi-locale Web sites with IBM Web Content Manager 7.0 and rendering plug-ins

The main scalability problem with this solution is the storing of all the languages within the one document. As soon as you have more than few elements and languages, the content save performance will be terrible.

Additionally, this approach isn't very friendly for editing, as the end user will see every language field, not just the fields they need/want to see.

Hello David, can you list the weak-points of this solution, I don't see why it doesn't scale very well !!

Unfortunately this approach doesn't scale very well and hence isn't recommended. Customers seeking multilingual features should look to the official WCM Multilingual Solution > https://greenhouse.lotus.com/plugins/plugincatalog.nsf/assetDetails.xsp?action=editDocument&documentId=DF2786F4F9D0CCAF852577E6000BA1B4
