Before getting started with the WebSphere Portal Beta, review this readme to learn more about planning and installing the beta.  Also review the known issues and limitations for this beta delivery. For instructions to install and use the beta software, refer to the IBM WebSphere Portal Beta Information Center.


Hardware and Software Requirements

The list below identifies the detailed system requirements supported by the IBM WebSphere Portal and Lotus Web Content Management beta.

Operating systems  (supported with 32-bit WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Portal)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition with SP2 (32 and 64-bit support)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition with SP2 (32 and 64-bit support)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition with SP2 (32 and 64-bit support)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise and Standard Edition (32 and 64-bit support)
    • Microsoft Windows XP Professional with SP2 (32 and 64-bit support)
    • Microsoft Windows Vista (32 and 64-bit support)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Standard with SP1 (32 and 64-bit support)
    • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise with SP1 (32 and 64-bit support)

    • SUSE SLES 10 (supported via VMWare image only)

Microsoft Windows hardware requirements 
    • Minimum 2.5 GB free disk space for installation for WebSphere Portal
    • Minimum 1.0 GB free disk space for installation for WebSphere Application Server
    • Minimum 4GB total disk space recommended for installation
    • x86-32: Intel Pentium processor at 500MHz or faster, AMD Opteron (32 bit kernel support only), Intel EM64T (32 bit kernel support only)
    • x86-64: AMD Opteron (64 bit kernel support only), Intel EM64T (64 bit kernel support only)
    • Physical memory: Under minimal load, WebSphere Portal can function with 2GB of RAM. However, 4GB is an optimal starting point for RAM in a production environment.
    • CD-ROM drive

JavaTMThe WebSphere-supplied Java 2 SDK is required for both the run time and any remote Java clients.

Web browsers (required for administration/configuration, sample program execution and launch pad. There is no restriction nor certification of Web browsers on clients that connect the server to display content)

Installing WebSphere Portal Beta

1.        Upzip the following files into the xxx directory.
            W-Setup.zip         539M        Portal Install
            W-1.zip                945M        WebSphere Application Server Base Trial 32-bit
            W-3.zip                684M        Portal Server (Part 1 of 3)
            W-4.zip                547M        Portal Server (Part 2 of 3)
            W-5.zip                429M        Portal Server (Part 3 of 3)
2.        Go to the xxx/W-Setup directory.
3.        If you are installing upon a 32-bit Operating system start the installation by running install.bat
4.        If you are installing upon a 64-bit Operating system start the installation by running install.bat -W defaults.force32bit=true
5.        Follow the installation instructions in the IBM WebSphere Portal Beta Infocenter.
