IBM Connections Portlet contains a number of Summary and Details portlets for various services offered by IBM Connections.
There are 8 Details portlets corresponding to service in IBM Connections. These portlets are read, write portlets. Using these Details portlets, user can interact with IBM Connections service to create/update and delete social data on Connections with in the context of IBM WebSpere Portal Server without switching to Connections.
In addition to these Details portlets, IBM Connections Portlets contains 4 Summary portlets for the services Profiles, Blogs, Bookmarks and Forums.
These Summary portlets are read only portlets and are usually used to display the summary or list of activities or latest updates done on that particular service on IBM Connections.
All Summary and Details portlets are community aware which means when these portlets are put into a community mapped page, then these portlets are capable to render only data which is relevant to community.
All these summary portlets are well connected to the details portlet using Portal piece of content(POC) approach. POC framework allows navigation between the portal pages and informs containing portlets on that page using Shared Public Render Parameters.
So using POC and shared render parameter, user can navigate from Summary to Details portlet, where Details portlet will display the exact data in which user is interested to.
A combination of Summary and Details portlet allows working with IBM Connections easily. While creating a business page where you may have core business related applications, you may put summary portlets to provide a view of social data along with business data. The communication between Summary to Details allows user to work with IBM data any time without navigating to Connections web user interface (UI).
Configuring navigation behavior from Summary to Details portlet
All Summary portlets can operate in two modes, these can be set to display detailed data within the Portal or can be configured to display that same data on IBM Connections web UI.
This navigation behavior from Summary to Details is configurable through portlet Configuration screen.
From configuration screen, just by selecting option to Display link to open IBM Connections in a browser window allows user to navigate to IBM Connections web UI instead of navigating to corresponding Details portlet.
Using edit shared settings options in every Summary portlet, you can modify the behavior of portlet in terms of how much information you want to display on Summary portlet.
Profiles Summary portlet when put in non community page, then it enables users to search for other users on IBM Connections as below:
While clicking on action links, user would be navigated to Profiles details either in Details portlet or in Connections web UI depending on the configuration set-ting in portlet configuration screen.
When any portlet is deployed on community page, then it displays data from that community only. Similarly, when profiles summary portlet is put into community page, it will list all the members of that community.
