Does anyone have the official word on this or is it just hearsay that there is not to be any future development? Experience would suggest that IBM have decided just to let Smartsuite fade away and not bother on any big upgrades.
Seems to me this is a very bad way to do business for the following reasons:
a) You upset the people who use the product, especially those who buy it now giving your business a bad name (I've about lost all respect for IBM these days - mainly because of this).
b) You fail to generate income from people who would buy an upgrade.
c) You fail to generate income by not selling the product to someone who would keep the product going.
I run a small business and I love Smartsuite. I've been using Organiser, WordPro (then Ami Pro) and Approach since they were separate programmes. I'm now switching over to Oscommerce (I believe Microsoft needs the competition) but I really don't like it any every time I'm forced to use it I think "I'd rather be using WordPro).
I've tried really hard to support IBM in my own way and was an advocate of OS2 and spent my hard earned money on buying the system for my computers and my precious time on learning how to use it only to be disappointed by the future lack of support (not IBM's fault I know but still a time I spent money on IBM and was disappointed).
I watch adverts on me TV telling me to let IBM help me with my big idea - well here is my big idea.
I think IBM should do the decent thing and if they are not going to sell it they should release it for development in the same way Star Office was released for Oscommerce.
It feels like IBM don't really care about the small guy at all and if they don't want our business they should at least sell what is essentially a smaller business product to someone who does.
Does anyone know if there are any groups trying to rescue Smartsuite from the big corporate hands of IBM?
Sorry if it sounds like I'm ranting but I feel very strongly about this and I'm REALLY disappointed that my favorite way of using a computer is now slowly going the way of the Dodo.
